Drinking water: a rare asset since Nargis flooded the country.
When Cyclone Nargis hit the Irrawaddy Delta, wells were flooded and drinking water supply damaged. For days, corpses could be seen floating in the rivers.
In May 2008, Knorr-Bremse Global Care provided victims of the cyclone with a water treatment package consisting of 14,000 water containers, 3.4 million water sterilization tablets and two water treatment plants including fittings.
An aid flight organized by Knorr-Bremse Global Care’s partner organization, World Vision, took off from Frankfurt am Main airport and, after various stop-overs, reached Rangoon, where local World Vision employees operating out of two base camps in the region distributed the equipment in the Irrawaddy Delta.
World Vision has been working for many years and currently has 580 staff involved in 31 development projects. By employing local manpower the organization has managed to achieve government approval for its activities and was able to use existing structures to launch a rapid aid operation.
