Belize - Renovation of a primary school

Most of the pupils at San Luis Rey RC School are Mopan Mayas.

Knorr-Bremse Global Care supports the San Luis Rey RC School in Belize.

San Luis Rey RC School in the village of San Antonio in Toledo district, southern Belize, was in urgent need of renovation. With some 2,500 inhabitants, San Antonio is the second largest village in the district, and the primary school not only serves as a school but also as a shelter in case of hurricanes and as a cultural center, for example for the annual “Toledo Festival of Arts and Culture“.

For more than fifty years the primary school has been educating children aged between 5 and 16 – most of them from the Mopan Maya ethnic group, which lives mainly in this part of the country. In addition to providing basic education and encouraging independent thought, the school also aims to bring the young people up to be self-confident citizens with an awareness and appreciation of their Maya culture.

Knorr-Bremse Global Care funded the cost of renovating the building to enable some 350 schoolchildren and 16 teachers to continue to use it both as a school and a hurricane shelter. Amongst other things, the roof, floor, ceiling and supporting pillars has been renovated and the electric cabling renewed.

The building also has to serve as a shelter during hurricanes.

Pupils and parents helped with the renovation.
