The disabled wing of an old people’s home near Knorr-Bremse’s site in the republic Tatarstan is undergoing complete renovation.
In Russia, elderly relatives are traditionally cared for by the daughter of the family. However, single mothers who have to go out to work find it very difficult to offer such intensive supervision and care. As family structures begin to collapse in Russia, the elderly are having an especially difficult time: Amongst all the social institutions needing support, old people’s homes tend to be neglected, as they have to compete with institutions for children or adolescents.
The nursing home in Naberezhnye Chelny accommodates 60 elderly people, 40 of whom are disabled, in two blocks with four patients to a room. Both buildings are now being completely renovated and equipped with multifunctional beds which will make life more comfortable for the patients and also facilitate the work of the nursing staff.
