In the aftermath of the earthquake in Sichuan, Knorr-Bremse Global Care is funding reconstruction of a primary school in Qu district.
The earthquake that occurred on May 12, 2008 in the Chinese province of Sichuan caused serious damage to the infrastructure: dams threatened to burst, many roads were left impassable and almost 5 million people were made homeless. It is estimated that about 7,000 school buildings were left in need of repair.
In the aftermath, Chinese employees of Knorr-Bremse joined forces with local Knorr-Bremse companies to donate 60,000 Euro to the Chinese Red Cross. And 70 employees also donated blood to victims of the earthquake.
Knorr-Bremse Global Care supported the reconstruction of Sichuan Shuangti primary school. Built in the 1980s to accommodate 222 schoolchildren and eight teachers, the school was left unusable and in danger of collapse by the earthquake.
The work was carried out in co-operation with the Amity Foundation, an independent Chinese organisation with which Knorr-Bremse Global Care has already successfully collaborated by the reconstruction of the Jiaxia School. The plan involved completely renovating the school building of Shuangti primary school, with its 360 m² of classroom space, erecting a fence around the entire site, building an entrance gate, and creating a new 990 m² play area for the children.
Knorr-Bremse Global Care is currently investigating the scope for providing further support for the earthquake region in and around Sichuan, and in mid September 2009, Knorr-Bremse managing director Frank Liu visited Chenghdu, the capital of Sichuan.
