Indonesia - Scholarship program for students

Aulianur is a biology student. He lost his parents in the Tsunami.

Aulianur is a biology student. In December 2004 he was swept away by a tsunami wave. Aulianur recalls, “On the day of the tsunami I felt like it was the end of the world. The tsunami pushed me more than two kilometers away from my home and separated me from the others in my family; none of them survived. When I opened my eyes, I was on top of the roof of a big house. I found the bodies of my grandmother and my niece, but no others. I lived for two years in a refugee camp without hope. I lost both parents, brothers, and a sister; I lost everything in the tsunami.”

In order to assure a sufficient number of technical experts and managers for the development of the province Aceh, a scholarship program has been realised to support students, who have lost house and/or parents through the tsunami with a monthly allowance of 30 EUR since May 2005. The focus lies on students studying medicine, veterinary medicine, agriculture or natural sciences. This project was accomplished with the help of the partnership between the University Syiah Kuala in Banda Aceh and Georg-August University in Göttingen.
