Knorr-Bremse Global Care is providing support to the charitable organization Masifunde in the form of a social worker and a school bus.
Masifunde supports motivated, talented children from Walmer Township in the South African city of Port Elisabeth by offering them teaching programs to prepare them for private school. A wide range of learning options (for example, English courses or additional subject coaching) – including during their free time – ensures the children achieve a good result in their school leaving examination. Leisure activities such as football, running or surfing instruction promote social skills and offer the children a sense of achievement. Masifunde also pays for school fees, teaching materials and uniforms.
The private schools and also some of the extra-curricular activities organized by Masifunde are located outside the township, so Knorr-Bremse Global Care has also donated a school bus to take the thirty children supported by the program safely to school.
In addition to this, Knorr-Bremse Global Care is funding a salary for Sekere Khomo, the social worker attached to Masifunde, for two years. In the mornings, Sekere carries out classical social work tasks related to the children covered by the Masifunde program – including working with parents; and in the afternoons he coordinates "Learn 4 Life" – an extra-curricular support program involving weekly group work, monthly excursions and activities during the children’s ten-day summer vacation.
