Burma - Supporting infrastructure in Rangoon

Lunch time at a school run by monks.

In conjunction with the charitable organization World Vision, Knorr-Bremse Global Care is supporting the Dagon district of Rangoon with measures to reconstruct the infrastructure destroyed by the cyclone in May 2008.

The health center in Yuzana Garden City, a part of Rangoon with 30,000 inhabitants, was badly damaged by the cyclone, but staff have continued to provide care to patients despite the danger of the building collapsing. Knorr-Bremse Global Care is paying for repair of the roof and renewal of electric cabling, and is equipping the clinic with surgical equipment.

The cyclone also caused damage to school buildings that were used as temporary accommodation by families who had lost their homes. Unfortunately the water pumps, sanitary facilities and waste water treatment plant were not designed to cope with such heavy use and as a result the schools no longer have drinking water of the required quality. Knorr-Bremse Global Care is providing a drinking water supply for an elementary school, a middle school and two upper secondary schools as well as improving the sanitary facilities.

One of the schools, run by monks, enables 250 children from poor families to receive an education by exempting their parents from having to pay for school fees, uniforms and teaching materials. The plan is to add a further building so that the education on offer can be extended by two years. Knorr-Bremse Global Care is funding the additional building work.
