In 2009 the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital launched a project to extend its fifty-year-old surgical unit and equip it with state-of-the-art technology. Knorr-Bremse Global Care funded the equipment for one of the operating theaters.
The Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospitalin Cape Town is regarded as one of the leading children’s hospitals in Sub-Saharan Africa. Every year, some 250,000 children are treated in the hospital and up to 800 operations are carried out each month. But this is not enough – the hospital is overcrowded because every young patient is admitted and provided with medical treatment regardless of the parents’ income, ethnic origin, religious beliefs or place of residence.
Building work started in March 2007 and was completed by the end of 2008. The operating theater funded by Knorr-Bremse Global Care has been in use since February 2009.
