Sri Lanka
Reestablishment of the fishing industry in Karativu
Project description:
Many fishermen have lost not only their houses and family members, but also their boats which allowed them to earn their living. KB Global Care has helped two local fishing cooperatives and has financed the provision of 21 fishing boats. The boats have a length of 19.5 feet and are equipped with a 15 PS outboard engine as well as with the nets required by the fishermen.
Furthermore, KB GC has supported the further added value chain by supplying the required work equipment to the fish traders. The traders each need scales, transportation box as well as a bicycle in order to be able to buy the fish from the fishermen on the beach directly from the boats and then to sell the fish at the market in the next village.
Location: East coast Sri Lanka, Karativu, a few kilometer to the South of Kalmunai.
Status: By February 2006, 10 boats and 8 "trader sets" had been distributed and put into active use. And from May 18 2006 onwards the remaining 11 boats with motors and nets were handed over, enabling all the selected fishermen to go back to work and make a living for their families. Project is completed.
Coordination on site:
Mr. M.K.V. Paranirupasingam, Assistant Director of Education in cooperation with Patrick Harrigan, Sri Lanka Children's Trust, Sri Lanka. Local supervision: Rohan Fernando (KB network) in cooperation with KB Global Care in Munich.
