Construction of a secondary school
Project description: There is already a primary school in the vicinity of the village of Peak Sneng, but the nearest secondary school is too far away for day pupils to attend it. In an effort to raise educational levels in Angkor Thom district and offer local inhabitants an alternative to working on the land, Knorr-Bremse Global Care has built a Junior High School for pupils in grades 7-9. The school, which will serve 150 children from Peak Sneng and surrounding area, consists of three classrooms, a computer suite, a library and a staff room; there is also a canteen, a sanitary block with showers, and a further building with teachers’ accommodation. Teaching started in October 2007. In addition to the usual subjects, compulsory English classes and an optional computer course have been introduced. The other partners in this project are the Munich-based organization Hilfe für Kinder in Kambodscha, which Global Care came across via the KB network, and Life and Hope Association, a local Cambodian relief organization. Location: Village of Peak Sneng in Angkor Thom district. Status: Project start: May 2007; project end: February 2008. Local coordination: Somnieng Hoeurn (Life and Hope Association), supported by Dr. Siegfried Zinkeisen from Munich (Hilfe für Kinder in Kambodscha). Link: www.hilfe-fuer-kinder-in-kambodscha.org
