Equipping an operating theater in a children's clinic

Project description:
The Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital in Cape Town is regarded as the leading children's hospital south in sub-Saharan Africa. Every year some 250,000 children are treated there and up to 800 operations are carried out per month. But that is not enough to cope with demand - the hospital is severely overcrowded because every young patient is admitted and provided with medical treatment irrespective of the parents' income, ethnic origin, religion or place of residence.

The Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital is currently extending the 50-year-old operations complex and aims to upgrade its equipment. As the hospital trains surgeons from all over Africa, it is important for the future that its medical equipment should be state-of-the-art.

Knorr-Bremse Global Care e. V. will be supplying modern medical equipment to an operating theater in the planned complex.

Place: Cape Town.

Status: In March 2007 a new operating theater will be built and is due to be supplied with the necessary technical equipment in summer 2008.

Local coordination:
Joanne Hen-Boisen (The Children's Hospital Trust Fund Raising Manager).
